Few video game endings in the history of the JRPG genre carry the emotional velocity of the ending of the original Trails in the Sky First Chapter. When Nihon Falcom delivered its heartbreaking cliffhanger decades ago, it left the player just as stunned as the protagonist Estell Bright. Joshua’s reveal and disappearance left a confused Estell Bright back in the capital. But her journey was far from over.

Following the foundation laid by the 1st Chapter Remake, Nihon Falcom and GungHo Online Entertainment have returned with Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Remake, an ambitious, beautifully crafted reimagining of what is widely considered the crown of the Liberl arc and one of the best Trails games altogether. Rebuilding a game of this narrative scale and legendary reputation is no easy task, and doing so in under a year is more than impressive. Yet this remake does more than just modernize a classic. It elevates every emotional moment, every sword clash and every line of dialogue into a breathtaking modern JRPG experience.
The Search for Joshua: Narrative Pacing and Character Arcs
Picking up mere moments after the traumatic unravelling at the Royal Villa in 1st Chapter, the game follows protagonist Estelle Bright once again. Heartbroken and confused by the vanishing of Joshua, whose memories been restored, leaving behind only his harmonica and web of secrets and questions for Estelle to uncover. Where many sequels take time to build moment, 2nd Chapter Remake leverages the player’s established emotional investment to deliver a narrative arc that feels instantly urgent and personal.
At the center yet again Estelle Bright, whose transition from a naïve Junior Bracer to an experienced, resilient hero remains one of the finest character studies in JRPGs. In the remake, her emotional journey is given newfound intimacy through subtler character animations, fully voiced key cutscenes and expressive cinematic direction. Estelle’s determination to find Joshua is never presented as a simple romance quest. It is a test of her ideals, her strength, her growth as a person and her unwavering empathy in the face of absolute darkness.
Opposing her this time, is the mysterious society known as Ouroboros, which was unveiled at the end of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, whose Enforcers step into the spotlight as memorable antagonists. Each Enforcer, from the theatrical phantom thief Bleublanc to the terrifying ruthless Lowe, is given a meticulous introduction that highlights their distinct philosophies and presence.
The game balances its large cast with an extraordinary grace, ensuring that companion characters like the returning Scherazard, Agate, Kloe and Olivier and new companions like Father Kevin Graham, receive meaningful arcs that intersect seamlessly with the central conflict and mystery.
The narrative structure expands significantly compared to the previous compared to the previous game. While the early chapters focus on investigating strange phenomena across Liberl’s provinces, the overarching mystery gradually unfolds into an escalating continental crisis involving ancient technology and geopolitical intrigues. The pacing during the mid-game can occasionally feel repetitive, as the player returns to familiar towns and cities under new threats, but the quality of the writing and character interactions ensure that even familiar places feel alive and interesting again.
Evolved Tactics: Hybrid Combat and New Mechanics
Building upon the dynamic battle system established in the 1st Chapter Remake, 2nd Chapter Remake refines the hybrid real-time and turn-based combat system even more. Players can seamlessly engage enemies on the field in real-time to gain tactical advantages, knock out weaker foes or immediately trigger classic turn-based command battles with bonus AT turns.
The command battle system retains the signature grid-based movement and timeline manipulation that defines the Trails series but introduces new key mechanics that deepen tactical options. The standout addition is the Brave Rush system, which allows linked party members to execute devastating follow-up attacks and tactical manoeuvres during real-time encounters and turn-based shifts.
The Orbment system also revies a significant upgrade with new tactical orbments, allowing higher-tier quartz synthesis and more intricate elemental Art setups. Craft abilities have been expanded with stunning new animations, while Super Crafts remain the cinematic highlights of the combat, delivering explosive visuals accompanied by roaring dynamic camera angles. Boss encounters, particularly against the Enforcers and high-tier monsters, demand deliberate preparation, status effect management and precise timing of Super Breaks.
Returning to Liberl Once Again: Visuals, Exploration and Immersion
Visually, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Remake is once again a stunning realization of Falcom’s classic world. Built with their latest 3D engine, the Kingdom of Liberl feels vast, vibrant and incredibly detailed. Towns like the seaside port of Ruan, the industrial hub of Zeiss and the majestic royal capital of Grancel have never looked so good. The fidelity that preserves the original architectural charm while imbuing them with dynamic lighting, bustling crowds and atmospheric weather effects, looks even better than in 1st Chapter Remake.
The highlight of the world-building, however, remains Falcom’s writing and attention to NPCs. Townsfolk throughout Liber do not merely repeat static lines, their dialogue update after every major story event, making it feel rewarding yet again to talk to them on Estelle’s adventure. Checking in on a local baker in Bose or a scholar in Ruan reveals ongoing personal subplots that ground the fantasy setting into something relatable and grounded.
Exploring is further rewarded by an array of side activities. The expanded Bracer Guild quest board offers rewarding bounty hunts and multifaceted side quests that go beyond simple fetch quests. Finishing them on time, will let story NPC refer to what you did and ranking up will reward you with rare items and quartz. Minigames such as fishing and the casino card games have been overhauled with new mechanics and provide a delightful diversion from the serious beats of the main story. And cooking returns with an intuitive recipe collection system that turns culinary experimentation into rewarding combat buffs.
Symphony in the Sky: From Music and Voice Acting
The Falcom sound team has rearranged and re-recorded the original soundtrack once again, elevating the iconic compositions with symphonic quality. Battle themes pulse with infectious energy and electric guitar riffs and you can feel your head whipping to them, while emotional moments are anchored by haunting violin melodies and piano renditions.
The voice acting performances across both English and Japanese audio tracks are once again exceptional, when they are there. Sadly, not everything is voiced, which would make the game even better. The expanded cast delivers excellent performances that match the emotional weight of the narrative. Estelle’s voice actress captures bother her fiery comedic banter and her heartbreaking vulnerability and growth with equal skill, while the voice work for Joshua and the Enforcers imbues key confrontations with chill-inducing tension and authority.
Sound effects in combat, from sharp clashes of steel to thunderous booms of high tier arts, provide punchy and satisfying feedback that keeps battles impactful and visceral.

Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Remake is a flawless remake once again. It honors its legendary roots while boldly stepping into the modern JRPG era.
