Some games are just good, while others earn found whole genres. We talk about Soulslikes, Roguelikes and Metroidvanias all the time. But all the way back in 2001, Dynasty Warriors 3 helped establishing many of the conventions that would define Koei Tecmo’s long-running Dynasty Warriors franchise and the Musou genre. Its straightforward but addictive combination of historical warfare, large-than life heroes and hundreds, if not thousands of enemies on the screen helped making the Musou formula a favorite among action-game fans. Now 25 years later, the remaster brings that experience back for modern hardware, preserving the original identity while revisiting its presentation and controls.

Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remasterd launched on October 1st, 2026 for Playstation 5, Xbox Series consoles, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The package is not just a re-release of the original game with higher resolution textures, but includes content from Dynasty Warrriors 3, its expansion Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends, but also visual improvements, refined controls and optional gameplay additions. It aims to bridge the path between preserving the original game and quality of life features for new players of the genre.
A familiar story told through the eyes of warriors
The narrative draws on Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the celebrated Chinese historical epic that provides the foundation for the long running series. Set during the turbulent period of the late Han Dynasty, the game follows the military struggles that eventually lead to the formation of the three rival kingdoms. Rather than presenting this history through a single protagonist, it lets players experience the conflict through the perspectives of multiple famous heroes.
Musou Mode is the central campaign, with characters associated with Wei, Wu, Shu and the other factions of the period, which includes famous characters such as Lu Bu, Dong Zhuo and Diaochan. Each officer has a personal route, allowing players to revisit familiar conflicts from different sides of the battlefield. Zhao Yun’s heroic image, Chao Cao’s ambition and Lu Bu’s formidable battlefield presence help give the different campaigns their distinct identities. The stories are relatively straightforward by modern standards, but the different perspectives make replaying important battles worthwhile.
It is important to understand that this is not a character-driven role-playing game with lengthy dialogues and branching decisions. Its storytelling primarily serves the combat scenarios, providing context for the next battle before allowing the player to return to the action.
Combat: Simple, Satisfying and surprisingly demanding. 25 years in the making.
The defining attraction remains the familiar Musou formula. Enter a battlefield, fight through masses of enemy soldiers, defeat important officers and help your army achieve its objectives. Attacks are built around accessible combos of regular and strong attacks, while special Musou attacks unleash devastating bursts of damage when the gauge is full. The roster’s different weapons and move sets provide lots of variety, even through the overall structure remains the same.
What distinguishes Dynasty Warriors 3: Completed Edition Remastered from other new entries of the series, is the way its battles teach the player to respect the opposing army. Ordinary enemies can still interrupt attacks, and enemy officers are capable of punishingcareless button smashing. Charging directly towards every officer without considering your surroundings can become surprisingly dangerous. You must pay attention to the battlefield conditions, nearby opponents and your army’s position rather than just assuming every encounter will end in an effortless victory.
The remaster’s new defensive options with guard and parry, make these encounters more manageable, without rewriting the combat system. A quick horse-mount also makes travelling across the battlefield much easier.
However, these new defensive abilities are not effective in every situation. Timing a perfect guard or evade, can be difficult in a crowded screen and players can still find themselves in hard to evade enemy combinations, while ranged units do the rest.
The balance between new quality of life features and the old school challenge is one of the remaster’s biggest strengths. For some it could have probably gone a lot further in terms of modernization, but for others it’s the perfect balance between old and new.
A Musou Amount to Unlock
The word Complete is no joke. This release brings together the original game and Xtreme Legends, the expansion that adds further scenarios, weapons, bodyguard, customisation and challenge-content. More than 40 officers return, alongside Ziluan, the protagonist of Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
Beyond Musou Mode, Free Mode provides the opportunity to revisit available stages with a chosen officer. Challenge and VS mode add further activities, while offline two player split-screen mode returns for players who prefer to fight alongside a friend or compet locally. This selection gives the game a lot of flexibility. Players can progress through character campaigns, revisist favorite battles or step away from the main progression loop for a different kind of challenge. And not only that, a two-player online multiplayer is scheduled for a free update in January 2027.
Progression also benefits from the return of officer development and the addition of Weapon Fusion. Characters improve their stats through continued use and weapons, and equipment offer additional ways to strengthen and customize your favorite fighters. Weapon Fusion lets players sacrifice unwanted weapons to transfer their elemental attributes and skills to another weapon. This gives spare equipment a practical purpose and introduces another layer of customisation to the long-term progression system.
Rare equipment and powerful weapons provide incentives to revisit stages under conditions and higher difficulty levels give players additional goals. The gameplay loop is simple but effective. Complete a mission, power up your character, acquire better equipment, then return to the battlefield ready for an even greater challenge.
For completionists, the volume of characters, equipment and unlockables can sustain hundredof hours of gameplay. The drawback is that replaying similar objectives across multiple officers can feel like busy work, but honestly, if you love the Musou genre you are there for the repetitiveness.
A visual overhaul that respects the original
The remaster uses Unreal Engine 5 to recreate the original game’s environments, character models and battlefields with substantially updated graphics and presentation. Improved lighting, richer colors, more detailed environments and enhanced weather effects help familiar locations to feel and look new. And rather than abandoning the original designs, the updated models retain the distinctive costumes and exaggerated personalities that define the series.
Nevertheless, the game does not suddenly become a technical showcase. Some animations remain stiff and the underlying battlefield layouts still reflect the design priorities of the older Dynasty Warriors games. That is not necessarily bad, as they remain faithful to the original identity, but it’s not for everyone.
The soundtrack still slaps hard and the rock-heavy songs remain a major part of the experience, complementing the exaggerated hack and slash violence and over the top confrontations between you and hundreds of enemies.
And if you are not a fan of a lot of the modernizations, you have the option to switch off the additional combat features with Classic Mode, which is very close to the original game.
Verdict
Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered, succeeds because it understands what made original title so memorable. Its updated visuals bring the ancient battlefields back to life, its new combat options make encounters more responsive and the inclusion of Xtreme Legends, creates a sizable package for both newcomers and returning players. The ability to toggle between the modern additions is especially welcome, ensuring that nostalgia and convenience do not have to compete.
We would like to thank Koei Tecmo for providing us with a copy of the game for review purposes.
